What Happened?

I love public service. Though its more rewarding to pass legislation championed by my colleague Mike Craig directing a modest sum to CareNet, I do enjoy the odd moments when someone thinks they're being cute. Take tonight for example. Mark Sobczak floats Wilma Brown's name as President of Council to replace Republican Rob Ludeman (who Sobczak voted for last year, after voting for Bob McCloskey three times first.)

Funny thing is, neither Wilma nor Mark will agree to support the Democratic Caucus on Council. Sobczak, Mayor Finkbeiner and local party chair John Irish engineered the Ludeman Presidency to begin with last year - so keeping him there is among the reasons Mark won't caucus. See, we've been asking them to caucus with the 6 remaining council Democrats, to discuss what we want in a new President, and to open it up to a simple vote of our majority caucus. Whoever gets a majority of Dems, we all agree to support. It's fair, honorable, breaks through personality conflicts and goes along way to eliminate outside influence in our decision. And, by the way, its how its done in Congress and other legislative bodies across the country.

If you wish to see a Democrat as council President, don't game it with the Republicans (again) leaving fellow Demcorats out in the cold and painting a poor, disorganized image of City Council. Contact Mark & Wilma and ask them to support a straight up and down vote of the council Democratic caucus - tell them to stop dividing us and agree to unite. Let's count to seven first, then open nominations as soon as possible.

Nobody here in the real world gives a damn about there being a Democrat as council President.

Most people see this for what it is, an unnecessary focus on who gets power rather than a focus on what should be done for the betterment of our city as a whole. Are you suggesting that Ludemen's Presidency has been a failure or do you just want the seat?

You are contributing as much to the poor, disorganized image of City Council as the rest of the career politicians there. You don't need the title to be a leader, you just need to act like a leader. Give it a try.

At this point, all I am interested in is a competent individual for council president. The only thing more disappointing than watching Democrats make themselves look like idiots over something like this is realizing the Republicans are so inept they can't even put enough pressure on the Democrats to force them to get their act together.

No sympathy on this one Frank. From your comment it seems that having a Democrat in power takes priority over truly serving the community.

Why were you showing disrespect for Wilma Brown? Laughing at her throughout the meeting is pretty juvenille. And if you were just doing what you said you were doing, smiling because people were taking pictures, here's another question, "Shouldn't you have been focusing on the council agenda as opposed to what was happening in the audience?"

As I've said on another blog, I consider myself part of the A team. I liked you and like Wilma. I've been supportive of you through all your antics in the last few years but this was the final straw. You are a media hog is more interested in getting on tv than helping people in Toledo. You are more interested in the politics than the public service and I honestly believe that your once promising political career is over.

a media hog huh? I rarely send out press releases my friend, as opposed to the three-a-day Mayor. Besides, what do you have against stoking public debate over public issues? Carty and Rob do an excellent job of keeping us independent Democrats out of the loop - do you expect us to be quiet and roll over for the man?

Wilma & Mark have wholly misrepresented what happened - you seem to want to give her the benefit of the doubt. Fine. But their unwillingness to caucus with us and double deal with the GOP is what I consider disrespectful.

A progressive agenda for the city awaits if they stop ignoring us and work together - Wilma never even asked several Democratic councilmembers for their vote. Is that how leaders get picked in Waterville?

you mentioned your comments on other blogs...you rip Ben Konop & Joe McNamara too. Honored I'm in the same catagory in your eyes.

Yep, you sure are. Frank, your numbers are going down, you have alienated so many people over the past few years and this is really going to hurt you in the African-American community. It's no wonder that Pete Gerken told me that he thought you were nuts. Gerken, Wozniak, Wade, Quilter, Bates, Ellen G, Kaptur...those are democrats who I am proud of. You and Ben and Joe are in the same boat and we all know that Joe is a democrat in name only. A democrat in the mold of Joe Lieberman.

I'm proud of Jack Ford.

I've never had a problem with Jack Ford, though Wilkowski was my candidate. I agree with you on your feelings of Carty but you are letting your obsession with Carty get in the way of governing. And in my mind, you needed to swallow your pride and support Wilma Brown. Wilma Brown has been a loyal democrat for years and would have been a good COMPROMISE candidate. You took a my way of the highway approach but what really pushes me over the edge was openly making fun of Wilma Brown during a council meeting. That is immature and not professional.

Sorry Frank. We don't send out three media releases a day.

I can count on one hand the number of media releases I've written for the mayor.

I do send out frequent media advisories (a much different document)to alert the media to press conferences.

Brian,
Who gets to attend these press conferences? Surely not the press??!! Carty and you throw out the ones you don't want there...is that really worth it??
As far as I can see, the citizens of Toledo have elected a "dictator" in the mold of Castro once again. Thank goodness I moved out of the city...for just these types of reasons. Don't bother sending out any further press releases or having press conferences...it is an unfair and partial process and that is not good for Toledo or democracy.

Ive got a couple quick questions Frank:

#1, what has Lude done to deserve the ousting? Has he been remiss as a president?

#2, what is the urgency that this cannot wait for three months when his term is over?

#3 Is this pure partisan/A Team vs B Team politics, or is there actually something that this gerrymandering will do for the people of Toledo?

You say his presidency was engineered by Carty and the Union guys. OK, maybe so, but your team wasnt trying to push something else thru as well?

Is this all because you lost and it's all a bunch of sour grapes?
