36 Hour Drill

Street visbility, radio & newspaper ads, phone calls - thousands of phone calls, late breaking GOTV direct mail, last chance media hits....I'm maybe giving away too many trade secrets here. All legit, all designed to maximize turnout in targeted precincts and persuade the undecided.

I give the Ford campaign credit for the color sticky note on the front page the same day of the Blade endorsement. I'm proud of the fight and of the Mayor, and his entire team. Our entire ticket is working round the clock to win - and our confidence and sense of possibility are great feelings. The 36 hour drill is channelling those feelings into the execution of a presidential-level GOTV program.

Tomorrow will be beautiful - with all its victories and disappointments - just beautiful.

Saint Crispin's Day Speech
from Henry V by William Shakespeare

This day is called the feast of Crispian:
He that outlives this day, and comes safe home,
Will stand a tip-toe when the day is named,
And rouse him at the name of Crispian.
He that shall live this day, and see old age,
Will yearly on the vigil feast his neighbours,
And say 'To-morrow is Saint Crispian:'
Then will he strip his sleeve and show his scars.
And say 'These wounds I had on Crispin's day.'
Old men forget: yet all shall be forgot,
But he'll remember with advantages
What feats he did that day: then shall our names.
Familiar in his mouth as household words
Harry the king, Bedford and Exeter,
Warwick and Talbot, Salisbury and Gloucester,
Be in their flowing cups freshly remember'd.
This story shall the good man teach his son;
And Crispin Crispian shall ne'er go by,
From this day to the ending of the world,
But we in it shall be remember'd;
We few, we happy few, we band of brothers;
For he to-day that sheds his blood with me
Shall be my brother; be he ne'er so vile,
This day shall gentle his condition:
And gentlemen in England now a-bed
Shall think themselves accursed they were not here,
And hold their manhoods cheap whiles any speaks
That fought with us upon Saint Crispin's day.

I swear, Frank, if you put as much passion into making Toledo ethically pure as you have in this Jack Ford campaign ...it sickens me to see this behavior by you used only to promote a worthless cause....

Drill is the appropriate word.

Looks like Ol' Jack is getting drilled. Same goes for Reform Ohio Now.

Just wondering, how much of that $4410 is net?

Frank, would it be safe to say that being Jack's cheerleader was the ball and chain of your own campaign?

Failure of all the RON votes, Jack's campaign, what were you working for?

Congrats on getting back on City Council. I hope this time you do the right thing...think about Toledoans instead of kissing Jack's ass.

Well, Jack went down honorably - gotta give credit where it's due, and R.O.N. got the b*tch slappin it deserved. But Frank made it in to council - 6th place sure, but you know what they call 6th place finishers: Councilman.

He also got his name spread around to the MoveOn folks that he's a gun 'for hire' no matter the ethics of the cause, so that oughtta help his auditor campaign fund. Gotta be ware of sleepin with the devil tho - that devil'll always get his due!

Karen Mc-H will have to find alternate parking, which is a good thing - Toledo deserves someone who acts like they are a servant for the people, rather than some sort of queen.

And Toledo voted Sobszak in? Gee, go figure - in this town a union guy gets in! I just hope he doesnt prove to be as crooked as McKloskey. I also hope we dont have to pay too many thousands of dollars in McK's defense fund.

All in all - a pretty good result at the polls.

Looks like the Lucas County BOE needs to be cleaned out from top to bottom1 Imagine, at 8AM, still only 84% of the ballots counted.

Shame on these incompetents!

It's a redux of 2000 and 2004.

Looks like the Toledo voters still are some of the most ignorant and ill-informed voters ever. Imagine sending McCloskey and Schultz back for their 4th term on council.

Then, of course, they chose Carty again so, no doubt, that says it all.

Should be interesting to see how many of our dedicated poll workers return for duty next election. Ms Kelly did her best to throw them under the bus when asked what happened yesterday morning. Even if the poll workers did screw up, take responsibility Jill. Be a leader and we'll get though it.
It's tough to paint the entire voting populace as ignorant though. They did kill issues 2,3,4&5, and Lucas County was mostly consistent with the rest of the state in its voting there.
As far as candidates go, I think apathy carried the day. Who can any non-union citizen enthusiastically rally around anyway? After the issues and a couple of judicial and school votes, I picked George Sarantou for council and was mostly disinterested after that. Was happy to see Karen McParkingticket got the boot. Looks like we get to keep the 6th man forum going here, at least until his run for state office.

Congratulations, Frank. You earned a tough victory.

To Frank's detractors: I disagree with Frank on some policy issues, but there is not a harder-working person on council than Frank Szollosi. I would rather have someone out there who cares and gives his all than a rep who is in it for the $29,000 paycheck.

I want to share an anecdote about Frank, if I may.

I was on Nazi watch last weekend after getting tipped off that neo-Nazi forces planned to return to Toledo. The skinheads were hanging around West Toledo by a certain tattoo parlor, and they were up to something (Bill White says that they were "gathering to attend a function some distance from Toledo")

Frank was the only local politician (with the exception of Jack Ford) who took this seriously. He spent hours on Saturday driving around town, and even made a few passes past Nazi Central on Sylvania Ave.

This, folks, was during the last weekend before the most critical election of his nascent political career, and he put aside his campaigning to help monitor the arrival of out-of-town white supremacists.

Again, I am not a paid flack, nor am I even a registered Democrat (I belong to no parties). I just think that people should know that Frank has character, and that we should not be so quick to buy into the ignorant caricatures about him.

Also, with regard to Frank's support for Jack, recognize also that he remained loyal to the mayor even when others were jumping ship. I think that loyalty should be recognized as a virtue, not a character flaw.

Thanks for listening. I will now climb down from my soapbox.

Since I can't add anything to that? Except to offer congratulations that you did win re-election to Toledo City Council.

(Lisa applauds Mike)

what are you people applauding for? he barely squeaked in past an unknown guy named vazquez and will only serve on council for a few months before blowing toledo for a run at state job. nothing but personal ambition for this guy, not even close to being devoted to this town

Is this true, Frank?

Are you seriously going to bail out on Toledo after all those speeches about the positive aspects and plans you have for Toledo?

Come on Frank, make a comment. One would think you'd be all over your site offering candidate insight and such.

Brian, he's probably tired, he was up late at the Board of Elections from what I heard.

and runnindog, I was applauding Mike because I agreed with what he posted. Nor do I think Frank's going to "bail" in a few months.

Frank -

We disagree with the politics of smoking. We'll likely disagree on the topic forever. You have well-funded reactionaries on your side and (so far) I have sensible voters on mine. (Smokers fund your non-smoking allies). Anyway . . .

I think JFo's fate was sealed last year when Toledoans modified the smoking ban. He earned and received a reputation for not caring about folks who invested their $ in Toledo businesses. Keeping your wagon hitched to the lost cause almost cost you your seat.

A couple of questions come to mind . . .

How can you look at the last two elections and still believe that Toledoans generally support your platform?

How can you look at the R.O.N. outcome and imagine that your association with that group gives your constituents confidence in your ability to make decisions that they favor?

I'm happy to see that made it Frank. It would be nice to see you dump the neo-socialist groups and their crap agendas and keep your focus on the solutions for Toledo's ills. One of those ills was Jack Ford and although it is commendable that you did demonstrate loyalty to the guy, the man was a total dud as a mayor. Friend or not, the best interests of the city as a whole should have come before blindly going along with whatever hizzoner tried to pull off. In my oppinion, Carty isn't the best cure for Toledo's problems but, he was the only cure available for our Jack Ford problem.

Sepp sez: One of those ills was Jack Ford and although it is commendable that you did demonstrate loyalty to the guy, the man was a total dud as a mayor

Dud? Is this because he doesn't shoot off his mouth like the adolescent Carty? Of course, you like that type of personality because it matches your own, no doubt.

Some folks like a thoughtful, reasonable person for mayor. A man who uses his brain rather than his tongue.

Yep, I'll take Ford any day over the immaturity of Carty. Just wait and see; it won't be long before we see the 'real' Carty begin to perform for us and the late night TV monologues.

By the way, I see that today already Carty's stooge Sobczak is making backdoor deals with the Republicans on council to get McCloskey voted in as president.

Hmmm. Didn't I read Sobczak's ads in the Blade talking about being 'your independent voice in city council?'

He's Carty's 'boy' on council; just watch him kowtow to whatever Carty wants.

10:38 AM
Blogger historymike said...

Yes, Carty and Sobczak owe the Teamsters big time.

Wonder what the price of support will be?

Didn't shoot off his mouth like Carty? "I have a picture of Malcom X on my office wall, I love to see white businessman's knees buckle when they see it" -Jack Ford as quoted in the Toledo journal. That's a lot more offensive than "move the deaf near the airport" not to mention racialy devisive in a city that has enough problems with that crap. Sobzac is Carty's boy and will kowtow? Sounds exactly like Frank kowtowing to Ford doesn't it? Call it like it is liberal_dem instead of just how you want to see it for once you mindless parrot. Take Jack over Carty if you want and, you know what you can do with him.
