For Toledo, Ohio

In the wake of the disturbances in North Toledo, the switchblade politics of the Toledo Mayoral race and party meltdown, and utter impatience with the direction of our city, state and country - local progressives cannot allow themselves rest:

1. 500,000 God-fearing, work-a-day Ohioans signed petitions expressing their outrage over the corruption permeating state government like a cancer. Issues 2, 3, 4, and 5 are the embodiments of that mainstream outrage, and those with everything to lose - on both sides of the aisle - are doing all they can to preserve the status quo. Anti-reform Democrats are about to strike, joining the pay-to-play Gov. Bob Taft boys, in seeking to defeat reform.

2. Kudos to the local activists who honored the death of the 2,000th U.S. soldier in Iraq. They gathered tonight at the Lucas County Courthouse and around the world. May God have mercy on the family & communities of all the fallen, and all who continue to serve - many on their third, fourth and fifth tour. My honor and respect for our service personnel is second to no one. At the other end, I'll give the chicken hawk, neo-con architect's of this war all the respect they deserve, too. Pigs.

3. The efforts to renew our city must step up on many fronts: in each of our homes, on our streets and in our neighborhoods, at work, school and church, at City Hall and through all our civic organizations, and at the state and national levels where critical, critical decisions get made that effect us back home in Toledo. On City Council we will join Mayor Ford in contending with the '06 budget, increasing resources and addressing issues within our safety forces, and building on the new spirit of cooperation in regional and neighborhood economic development.

4. According to a report by the US Conference of Mayors, 2000 census data reports 6,500 Toledoans ages 16-24 were neither enrolled in school nor working. That number is undoubtedly higher in 2005. Each and every one of us has to accept responsibility to reconnect young people with the American Dream.

My search for solutions makes different stops: From the The Communitarian Network and The Third Way (wrong on trade, right on tech & values) to the fighting mainstream progressives. Perhaps the battle for Ohio's Democratic Senate nomination will serve to galvanize us with strong debate on the war, taxes, health care, and the competitiveness of American business, a.k.a. "jobs". Maybe the Governor's race will catch fire. This I know: citizens of Toledo - and of cities, townships and villages across Ohio - would be well served by having a local progressive demanding accountability and putting people before special interests statewide.

Frank- Regarding the corrupt cadre of neo-cons now in control of the Republican Party, I found these interesting quotes from some of the most contemptuous of these men.

Just as former President Clinton was ordering U.S Military troops into Bosnia [which caused NO deaths to our soldiers] these comments vomited forth:

"You can support the troops but not the president." --Rep Tom Delay (R-TX)

"Well, I just think it's a bad idea. What's going to happen is they're going to be over there for 10, 15, maybe 20 years." --Joe Scarborough (R-FL)

"Explain to the mothers and fathers of American servicemen that may come home in body bags why their son or daughter have to give up their life?" " --Sean Hannity, Fox News, 4/6/99

"[The] President . . . is once again releasing American military might on a foreign country with an ill-defined objective and no exit strategy. He has yet to tell the Congress how much this operation will cost. And he has not informed our nation's armed forces about how long they will be away from home. These strikes do not make for a sound foreign policy." --Sen. Rick Santorum (R-PA)

"American foreign policy is now one huge big mystery. Simply put, the administration is trying to lead the world with a feel-good foreign policy." --Rep Tom Delay (R-TX)

"I had doubts about the bombing campaign from the beginning ... I didn't think we had done enough in the diplomatic area." --Senator Trent Lott (R-MS)

"I cannot support a failed foreign policy. History teaches us that it is often easier to make war than peace. This administration is just learning that lesson right now. The President began this mission with very vague objectives and lots of unanswered questions. A month later, these questions are still unanswered. There are no clarified rules of engagement. There is no timetable. There is no legitimate definition of victory. There is no contingency plan for mission creep. There is no clear funding program. There is no agenda to bolster our over-extended military. There is no explanation defining what vital national interests are at stake. There was no strategic plan for war when the President started this thing, and there still is no plan today" --Rep Tom Delay (R-TX)

"Victory means exit strategy, and it's important for the President to
explain to us what the exit strategy is ." --Governor George W. Bush (RTX)

Hi Frank:

Thanks for mentioning the Toledo protest; local media coverage was scanty at best. Yes, it is indeed possible to simultaneously support the troops while disagreeing with the war in Iraq.

Likewise, the DC protest got little attention; I was surprised that in Clamor today remains one of the few to even report what happened in DC at the "die-in."

Also agree with your macro view of the city in the aftermath of the riot; too many people want to simply lock up a bunch of the rioters and call it a day, instead of addressing the issues of poverty, unemployment, and police-community relations that contributed to the events of October 15.

Progressives also known as socialists and communists were some of the main instigators of the riots in N. can you still identify yourself with these vermin Frank is a mystery. Issues 2,3,4 and 5 smell rotten if you actually READ what the true intent is and not just whats being sold to you in a 30 second adspot.

Kudos to the local activists? Now really, what have they done other than try to politicize death # 2000 in order to take a jab at Bush? Strange that I never seen or heard of 1 protester when soldiers were being dragged through the streets of Mogadishu and defiled and spat upon. But, then again, their guy was in office so a few military deaths meant nothing.

Liberal dem, no deaths in Bosnia? Well, there were some deaths and some folks were even disfigured due to some of the 4 million unaccounted for mines and, unmarked minefields that littered the country when we arrived. And, I don't remember seeing you there during 1 day of it!
Frank, if your search for solutions is making different stops, how about a stop at common sense? The socialist organisations you are stopping at are not "mainstream" America or even close. I doubt that you are hearing from people on the street that we need higher taxes and a crap social medicine program that has been tried and has failed every other place it's been tried. Progressives and special interests go hand in hand so, demanding accountability should be interesting.
Frank, please tell me that you are NOT one of the 3 "city employees" that are on leave to serve some political groups while still drawing a paycheck. I actually voted for you ( not for your politics but, because I actually do think your heart is in the right place when it comes to Toledo) and I'm pretty consevative as if you did'nt know. Thanks for the forum.

Chickenhawk means something entirely different what you might think it means. This administration is far from the greatest of all time, but I highly doubt anyone on the Bush staff seeks out and molests young boys.

Nick - If that's the first definition that comes to your mind, perhaps you are in need of a little counseling.

For those not familiar with the expression, chicken hawk refers to a person who now advocates war after having previously avoided military service themselves.

Well, Urban Dictionary agrees with me. That's been the definition for decades. I think you're thinking of the term Yellow Elephant.

Blogger !@#$%^& said...

Your definition is also correct, I would certainly never dispute a source like the "Urban Dictionary"

Yellow elephant - synonymous with chickenhawk.

Check these out -

More Chickenhawk

Added trivial note - the origins of the term "chickenhawk" date back to England during WWI.

No deaths caused by enemy fire.

I'm only going to comment to one part of what you wrote Frank.

According to a report by the US Conference of Mayors, 2000 census data reports 6,500 Toledoans ages 16-24 were neither enrolled in school nor working. That number is undoubtedly higher in 2005.

I ask, why is it that you feel that number is higher? Has this administration failed in that aspect? Is it due in part to the educational system? If so how could either candidate make a difference in that since the Mayor has little power over the TPS. Or if you don't feel comfortable answering that since you are not running for Mayor, what can City Council do realistically besides spend money on a community center that if they have not been inspired enough to finish school is going to be hardpressed to make a major difference.

This may sound off the wall to you, but I believe we have to start with the parents. If they have jobs and most importantly if they have hope that their lives will improve they will pass that on to their children. One of the most important dreams for all parents is that their children will have a better life than they have. It is to me, the basis of encouragement to have this hope as a parent. When hope is gone, you don't care if your child finishes school or drops out...why bother? nothing will change...That is what we have to change if we really want to make a difference and it will not be easy. Nor will it be quick.

I agree with you that it is the responsibility of all of us, including parents. It is difficult at times to be a parent especially when you are dealing with basic survival issues, I've been there. But it is possible, some of us have done it. Many more will continue to, we just need to find a way to encourage the rest. To quote the old song "Teach your children well"....

I'm sorry for the long winded soap box, but this is an issue I feel is important. These kids are our future...

Now I can CLEARLY see you didn't write "No deaths caused by enemy fire." or "How many angels can dance on the head of a pin?" in that opening sentence.

Liberal Dem, do yourself a favor, spare us the dramatics. Try putting everything together in your presentation instead of just piecemealing it together, then adding stuff like you MEANT to.

Unlike you, Liberal Coward, Sepp puts it all on paper so it's CLEARLY understood.

"So, Sepp, what the hell does your final line suggest? And may I ask why you aren't in Iraq 'fight'n for our freedom?'" What are you TALKING about? I didn't understand it and I KNOW I am smarter than that gene pool you crept from.

Why aren't YOU "Fightin the Iraqi fight", LD? Flat Head or "Google Dependant"? You do know you CAN be recruited for being stupid, LD...check it out and back up what you say, chump. Sepp was IN Somolia, were you?

Heck, I wonder if you had anything stronger than a cap gun shot at you with the intent of killing you, let alone discolor your favorite shirt.

Oh, and when you're done fumbling about for a retort, wrap your beak around my "bloke", k?

Frank-- looks like your blog has attracted the usual fungi.

It is interesting to note the anger in their words. Of course, if I were one of those Bush-lovers, I'd be mad as hell too. Just think: the corruption in the White House is finally oosing out like a slime from a festering canker.

And these Bush-lovers just can't face the fact that their hero, their god, is going down. Perhaps they could use some therapy sessions in anger management. But please, don't beat your wife and kids just because you are angry at the mistake that YOU made in giving Bush and his cadre of cronies more power to reign like the fascists that they are. It wasn't your family's fault.

Oh well. We Dems can hold our heads up high and proud knowing full-well that we supported and campaigned for John Kerry, a man with real character.

Sorry, losers, but don't pee on us; we cast the intelligent vote last November.

Just try to be more creative with your witty retorts and sand-box mentality name calling. Assures most of us that we're o.k. Thanks.

As far as Toledo Ohio, if we had less greed and more involvement and committment from those in in power, this truly would be a productive community. It's been done.

The the families of the guys that lost it to a mine still grieve as much as those that get shot. I did my time serving the country, so tell us all what sacrifices have YOU made in your life? Any selfless act come to mind that you personally contributed to? Anything besides being "active" as an "activist"? So where were you during Somalia? Where were you when we were bombing Yugoslavia? Where were your shouts of defiant protest that our government was bombing a sovereign nation that was battling a foreign insurection and we were bombing them for defending their own borders. I doubt you ever said a word. I doubt you even cared. After all it wasn't Bush ordering the bombings so it was ok.

Say, Billy, while we are on the topic, would you, as a Republican rather be called a neo-con or a conservative?

...and to our wonderful patriot Sepp-

Looks like you have a lot of 'doubts.' Of course, being the righteous right-wing neo-con that I suspect you are, it goes along with the territory.

liberal_dem - I repeated the liberal vs progressive question in earnest - what's the difference?

as far as the other, lemme save you a couple strokes on your keyboard. You dont need to type (bait). Everything you post is baiting, thats all you're about. And as far as what I'd rather be called? Im sorry, but you're just not important enough for me to care one way or another what you call me.

If all one has is names to call, they must not have anything else to think about. Case in point, the ford campaign.

I do know that both the term progressive and neo-con are terms made up by the left. Its kind of n ignorant way of thinking that if you come up with a new name or title to make yourself look better or make your opponent look worse, then you've actually accomplished something when you really have done nothing at all.

You'll find that a lot of the lower-echelon does that, and pretty much without exception the person behind it is just as fake as the unearned title itself.

So seriously, is progressive just another term the left made up because it 'sounds' better than liberal?

Remember, You asked a question one time about the patrolman's assn, and who they supported, and I answered it straight out and backed up my response, no problem!

Right-wing neo-con? Is that what you label everything you disagree with? I guess the label still carries more honor than blind-sheep-liberal-parrot would. Actually, you seem rather dense to me and I need not 'prove' anything to you. Too bad that you are such a narrow-minded literalist that you cannot recognize the pun subtleties in my flagpole reference.

Billy- I believe a progressive is one who welcomes progress as opposed to a conservative who would like to turn the clocks back to 1940, Jim Crow and all.

BTW, Billy, would you consider yourself to be more an Eisenhower Republican or a GW Bush Republican?

8:07 AM

Still no answer. "a progressive is one who welcomes progress", Then what's a liberal?

anyway, you had two shots to answer a simple question, just like I answered your question about who had the backing of the Patrolman's assn!! LOL - you fool!!

Instead of net surfing in search of hate material to put in the lame blog that anonymous reffered to (and btw, he's 100% correct in his analogy) you might've been better off going to a dictionary site where you could have learned that a rhetorical question is one where you KNOW THE ANSWER before you ask it, in order to make a point.
