Rally Marcy

Today's DeWine story by The Blade's political writer Jim Tankersley has me feeling grumpy Sunday morning. Why won't one of our veteran Ohio Democrats stand up for the citizens of Ohio, and really the country, by fighting for the Senate?

My pick: Rep. Marcy Kaptur - 9th District Click here to send her a note of encouragement. And click here to vote for Marcy in an on-line poll at growohio.org (Note: you must scroll to bottom of that webpage to vote.)

First, she'd be an outstanding candidate for Governor. Yes, she's on the hallowed House Appropriations Committee's most powerful subcommittee, Armed Services - huge for our district. But Kaptur connects to rural voters better than Paul Hackett. She would light a fire for desperately needed reform, and as Ohio's Governor become instant Presidential timber.

Alternatively, a Senate seat means even more of our tax dollars returned to Toledo and the 9th CD. The campaign money would be there for her - national fundraisers to be hired, the DSCC, her wealth of national connections. She ran for the House in 1981 with far fewer resources at the start.

Marcy's vision of our country with:
- well paid working men and women with health care and dignified retirements,
- affordable and world-class education and research institutions,
- domestic, renewable, clean energy sources,
- a tough, humane foreign policy,
- strong defense, militarily and economically,
combined with her honesty and high ethics, fierce patriotism and a human, populist touch - all this taken together presents to the voters of Ohio a national leader, someone disillusioned Ohioans can believe in, can take hope from, can rally around.

2006 is fundamentally different than previous election cycles. How Democrats respond to Ohioans in these days after the Governor's disappointment is critical.

10:15PM LATE NOTE: I missed The Blade editorial this morning on Sherrod Brown & the Senate race. We need people willing to fight for Democratic unity and the state's progress.

I totally agree. I just sent her an e-mail awhile back to urge her to run for U.S. Senate. She's very well represented in this part of the state. I've met her several times and she's a very attentive and sincere lady. So it's up to you Ohio Democratic Party to encourage her to run against Sen. DeWine--give her unwaivering support and stop with this in-party nonsense. It's time for the Democrats on the state level to step up to the plate. NOW MOVE IT!

Marcy Kaptur is a socialist, Period. That mode of thinking goes against the tenets that this country was founded upon. You all would be better off distancing yourselves from her, and we all would be better off if she were to retire.

- well paid working men and women with health care and dignified retirements (enforceable how? Where in the US constitution you want her to represent does it tell how much an employer may or may not pay?

- affordable and world-class education and research institutions (Affordable by taxing the evil rich. Remember, "From all according to their ability - To all, according to their need is straight from the Communist Manifesto)

- domestic, renewable, clean energy sources (But we need to elect her to office before she reveals what these might be? As a congressman she could already be helping the nation with these - what are they?)

- a tough, humane foreign policy,
- strong defense, militarily and economically,
combined with her honesty and high ethics, fierce patriotism and a human, populist touch - (We are to forget how she has voted to defund our fighting men now, and has compared the terrorists to our founding fathers? Or the fact in itself that she refuses to call our enemys 'terrorists' at all, but 'freedom fighters'?

Frank - agree or disagree with the war in Iraq, but are we ultimately fighting terror, or freedom fighters? My mind is not made up on giving you my vote or not, but this would be a make or break question. Terrorists or freedom fighters??

all this taken together presents to the voters of Ohio a national danger and someone to flee from.

It's amazing to see the ignorance of the Marcy-haters. You guys don't realize how much she does for our region regardless of her views. I don't agree with everything she stands for along with all the other elected officials. But she does get my vote because she gets the work done and she "respresents" us well--imagine if we didn't have her in office this region would be oblivious in all aspects.

Name or list the things Kaptur has "done" for our community please. All she does is insert herself into any and all publicity opportunities - like a female Al Sharpton.

Anonymous Marcy Lover -

first off, Marc and I both explained their views pretty fairly - I think Marcy's a socialist, and many of the things Marcy has said thru the years back this view up. I could list them, and would be happy to if anyone would like me to. Marc took something Frank posted and counter-pointed the items he disagreed with, with intelligent debating points and questions. This is how forums work.

You on the other hand said "I don't agree with everything she stands for along with all the other elected officials. But she does get my vote because she gets the work done and she "respresents" us well"

She 'represents' well? Isnt that like dating someone you ordinarily wouldnt because he/she looks good?

And before you start calling folks ignorant, you might want to look at your own writings:

First off, you better look up oblivious in the dictionary and rethink the context you're using the word for, because your usage conveys the exact opposite of what you mean.

Then when you say - "ignorant prevails", the actual phrase would be 'ignorANCE prevails.

Marcy should run for the Senate. She'd win. I don't think she will because Marcy has a long history of not taking any chances since she was elected a long time ago. With all her time in the House, she should be the Minority Leader -- but she quit in the middle of the campaign. Someone should push her out of comfort zone and do what's right for Toledo and Ohio. Fedor wants to replace Marcy and will do a good job. She'll be there for just as long as Marcy was.

Liz--

Pardon for my spelling of the word "ignorant"--you can blame your buddy Republican Governor Bob "sh"Taft for draining state dollars from public schools and universities.

There is nothing wrong with being a socialist in fact I know for sure that the conservative values is not helping all walks of life at this time (so we will not go there). Something tells me that Marcy has been in office for more than 20 years--doesn't that count for something? For some reason the majority keeps electing her back in office. Can you counter-argument that fact?

She has funneled millions of federal dollars to this region to schools, research, environment, public transit, homeland security, economic development, agriculture, social agencies, road projects and so on to keep it funded and strong to serve our communities' needs. Not many areas in this country has an elected offical that does just that--she is in this region countless of times when most are in Washington hob-knobbing to the lobbyist and elitist. So the bottom line is--she has MY vote.

Stop before you overanalyze everything here in this blog--if you think you can do better than Marcy or think someone can do better then where is this person? Where are you? Why haven't you run for office? I suggest you get up to the plate and do it--because the biggest problem in this area is everyone seems to be a complainer or dislikes everything so they have to nitpick every little thing that happens and YET doesn't do anything about it. Ever heard of the phrase--"All talk no action?"

You have two options:

#1 Vote the person out & get up to the plate
(or)
#2 Move out of the region if you hate it so much

So Liz---who's living in a Glass House now?

Cordially yours,

MarcyLover

You say "Something tells me that Marcy has been in office for more than 20 years--doesn't that count for something? For some reason the majority keeps electing her back in office. Can you counter-argument that fact? "

argue that fact? what's to argue? the democratic/union mentality of this area speaks for itself. "I'm gonna vote the way the union tells me to" is a way of life around here. Thats why we are a big doughnut hole of no growth with growth all around us in the more conservative voting counties - check the stats yourself if you dont believe me.

You go on to say that folks "doesn't do anything about it. Ever heard of the phrase--"All talk no action?"

What do you know about me? I am quite active politically, and this country provides MANY more options for voters than running for office themselves or moving out. You should review them sometime.

Lastly, The biggest problem Ive got with your diatribe is when you say "There is nothing wrong with being a socialist"

Are you for real?? I challenge you to find one person who has ever lived under a socialist regime who would EVER to back to it.

take a second and check out

Start at about #15 and keep going, and see if anything out there rings a bell.

Im sorry Marcylover, but you've got the wool pulled over your eyes. But please keep being vocal about your views. They'll push more folks over to the good side than anything Marcy's opposition could ever do!

Marcy would have a tough time winning a Senate race. As Hackett showed, Democrats wine in in Ohio as a Democrat by being a moderate/conservative Democrat -- Republican-lite in other words. That's why Tim Ryan would win. He's pro-life and endorsed by the NRA. That sells in most of Ohio. Unfortunately, Marcy would be hard for most Ohioans (outside of Toledo) to swallow. She's going nowhere. If she does run, Fedor will clearly be her replacement. Frank would follow her when Fedor's done.

Maybe I should post a link to election results for her in rural, GOP dominated counties like Fulton.

Don't simply accept the Gannon baloney on Marcy - look at her popularity - unarguably reflected in election returns - in the small towns of NW Ohio. I've seen her bring hundreds of conservative farmers to their feet, stomping and clapping.

Underestimate her at your own risk.

You're right Frank. Marcy is not as liberal is everyone thinks she is -- she was one of the few Democrats to vote against embryonic stem cell research. That's hardly a "liberal" vote.

Here's a quote from the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette about the vote. Marcy was one of only 14 Democrats to vote against it. Here's an excerpt from the story:

...While 187 "yes" votes were from Democrats, 14 Democrats joined 180 Republicans in voting against the measure. One was Rep. Marcy Kaptur, D-Ohio, an ardent abortion foe.

Kaptur said the bill should be defeated because there were no hearings on it, so many questions, including ethical dilemmas it posed, went unanswered. "We are debating the essence of human life, the creation of life and the destruction of life, how your family's DNA is propagated and bequeathed to the next generation," she said. "My opinion about this bill is -- not yet."...

Marcy is described as an "ardent abortion foe" by a paper owned by the Block family! She's more conservative than people think.

Sad.

Sad is using an extremely sensitive issue as a ploy to protect position for self preservation.

You are either pro life or pro choice. Legally it dosen't matter, but to straddle the line to appease everyone is a sign of weakness in character.

Is that a person you want to represent you in the Senate?

Brian, you are right that it is sad that Marcy straddles the line on abortion. You're right -- if you are Catholic (and she is) abortion is wrong. No debate about it. Straddling the line on this issue is inexcusable. She did the same thing on gay marriage. She refused to give an opinion on it by saying it was an issue for the state. What a cop out! She lives in the state and should have let her opinion be known. I suspect that she supported gay marriage, but did not have the courage to say so.

I believe that the list of her accomplishments is about as long as our esteemed mayors is.

2 or 3 small things, nothing to really brag about, but just enough to keep the union hacks swilling their union made beer in their union made cars on the way to the union grocery store HAPPY!(unless its Walmart, God forbid!)

Marcy has worked hard to return our Federal tax dollars. Here are some recent examples :

July 2005
• $17.9 million in funding to meet Toledo-area transportation needs
• $1 million federal award to the Put-in-Bay Port Authority to enhance access to safe and clean drinking water to the island residents, businesses and tourists

May 2005
• $4.9 million in federal support for a tri-state, multi-year, regional watershed effort that will inventory water resources, flood control, conservation, and distribution needs for the Western Lake Erie basin

February 2005
• $200,000 to the Sandusky Post Office historic site, now the Sandusky’s Museum of Carouse, for its continued preservation
• $84,000 to the Toledo Fire Department, an Assistance for Firefighters Grant
• $4 million in homeless assistance awards for eight initiatives in Lucas County

November 2004
• $700,000 for two Toledo area hospitals ($650,000 for MCO, $50,000 for Toledo Children’s Hospital) and $1 million for the redevelopment of the Toledo I-75/I-475 Interchange.
• $4 million for area water infrastructure improvements($2 million for the City of Toledo, $1 million for the City of Sandusky and $1 million for Ottawa County
October 2004
• $1.3 million federal award for the creation of the Northwest Ohio Small Turbine Institute, a joint venture between the Toledo-Lucas County Port Authority, the University of Toledo’s College of Engineering, NASA Glenn Research Center, and Teledyne Continental Motors-Turbine Engines to research and develop advanced applications of turbine engines for NASA and private sector markets
• $9 million in housing assistance awards for two affordable elderly housing efforts in Lucas County
• $1,800,000 for the city of Amherst Wastewater Treatment Plant and for the city of Vermilion sanitary sewer rehabilitations

September 2004
• $400,000 to help the Toledo Fire Department prepare for possible disasters, including terrorist attacks
• $700,000 in federal funding for a youth mentoring program and for the creation of a Lucas County juvenile drug court
• $6 million over five years (1.274 million per year) to the University of Toledo for science and mathematics education as part of the Education Teacher Quality Enhancement Partnership

May 2004
• $1.3 million federal award to spur the purchase of locally-grown fruits and vegetables by area seniors through the Senior Farmers’ Market Coupon Program

January 2004

• $500,000 in infrastructure investments to improve vehicular access to the Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge in Ottawa County

The list goes on and on back for more than 20 years!!!

Marcy’s accomplishments are also not solely monetary. She has been recognized with the following awards: Veterans of Foreign Wars Americanism Award, in part for introducing the legislation authorizing the National World War II Memorial in Washington in 1987, as well as for her longstanding commitment to America's veterans; the Prisoner of War "Barbed Wire" Award for her commitment to soldiers missing in action.

Marcy refuses to accept Congressional pay raises and donates them to offset the federal deficit and charitable causes in her home community.

Congresswoman Kaptur sits as the senior Democratic woman on the House Appropriations Committee. She has secured subcommittees on Agriculture, the leading industry in Ohio, and Defense. Kaptur is the first Democratic woman to serve on the House Defense Appropriations Committee. (Marcy has also served on the Budget; Banking, Finance and Urban Affairs; Veterans Affairs Committees, and on Veterans Affairs-Housing and Urban Development and Independent Agencies (Environmental Protection, Veterans, and NASA and the National Science Foundation), Foreign Operations, and Military Construction Appropriations Subcommittees.)

Strange set of posts on this one.

Marc Davis, we'd all be better off if our country wasn't in the business of inciting terrorists through a deceptive foreign policy. I read yesterday the Administration is planning another 4 years in Iraq - send the President's daughters to fight - I love our troops enough to be completely disgusted we're losing Americans on account of lies, outright lies by this Administration, aided and abetted by the Republican Congress. No wonder the President's approval ratings are falling as fast as Governor Taft's.

It's a volunteer military. Each and every soldier, sailor, airman and, marine know it when they join that they could be deployed. BTW, are you referring to the deceptive policies that incite terror from this administration or from Clinton's? The terror campaign against America was started in '96 with the embassy bombings and 9-11 was supposedly being planned at that time too. The Cole bombing was no spur of the moment idea either. Seems the deceptive policies were in place before GWB was even in office but, we can look past that can't we?

Well well Frankie reveals himself to be the real radical socialist ignoramus we suspected him to be.

Pretty wild accusation there Francis. "Forced back into combat" by GWBush "to go die in the desert".

You sure have a lousy opinion of what our military is PROUDLY doing in Iraq. Do you really believe the swill that is fed to you by the beatniks of the DNC and MoveOn.org?

I think people like you ought to take a trip to Baghdad and then to Kabul and talk to a few real Iraqi citizens before you start judging them not worthy of the freedom our young MEN and WOMEN (not children) are giving them.

Words carry meaning with them. Think before you speak Francis.

BTW how many Iraqi citizens are in Kabul? How many of our armed forces are there? Not enough. My point is we should be focusing on the war on terror as opposed to what GWB led us into.

Frank, I do respect and agree with your views on this certain issue of fighting the wrong war.

I agree with you that GW has failed the military by not allowing them to accomplish the mission set forth upon them following 9/11/01. The documents associated with the "Downing St. memo" just shows that America is protected from all of the facts. Now the whole world is pissed at the American arrogance.

Now we got Pat Robertson PUBLICALLY endorsing AND encouraging killing another human being. Lovely. All worried about another $20 billion dollar war in South America. Damn Republicans.

I just hope Marcy dosen't golf.

Sorry about the labeling but you really ticked me off.

Kabul is in Afganistan, and so are our troops...not just in Iraq. We also have men and women stationed around the world that are involved in the same war.

What I don't think many anti-war folks understand is that the constant negativity really affects those men and women serving. It tells them that what they are doing is wrong. What kind of mindset do you want our troops to have? A negative one? or one of Support?

Our military is one big team. When you criticize one member of that team, you do it to all of them. So when you tell them that their Commander in Chief (team captain) is Hitler or Pol Pot, you are essentially telling the rest of the team that they are the same.

Marcy Kaptur compared our enemies to our founding fathers. She called them "freedom fighters". Tell me which Muslim country is free right now. Freedom to vote, freedom to speak out, freedom of women to work and hold office...
So far, I can't think of any that are truly free except Iraq.

Iraq has only been free since WE made it happen for them. No freedom fighters but the ones from the USA. The insurgents in Iraq are 99% foreigners and want nothing more than power over the people.
