Carty & the Kest Gang: Last Stab

As noted over the past year, the arrogance and connections between Carty and the old Kest gang couldn't be stronger. Both Carty & Kest copped guilty pleas, somewhat like Taft, (no contest!) to ethics charges - and all 3 have courted Tom Noe. Though Kest/Carty have relied on the same (crumbling) base of support, the Kest '01 contributors aren't buying stock this year in Finkbeiner's last run for office. Do the citizens of Toledo really want the Kest gang running municipal government? Or our elections, for that matter?

Today's Blade story confirms suspicion: longtime Kest/Carty operative Domenic Montalto - less than three weeks before Finkbeiner is on the ballot - will replace an able, talented professional in the Lucas County Board of Elections. Just the kind of arrogant backroom deal that left Lucas County without a popularly elected Treasurer for almost a year. Will he now double dip? Taking the salary at the BoE along with a modest county retirement benefit?

With no activity or efforts to win elections at the ballot box coming out of Democratic Headquarters, perhaps Carty & the Kest gang trust old pol Domenic will simply rely on an old fashioned way: stealing elections. After all, Carty's races have always been painfully close. Throw out a few boxes of absentees from the central city - surging into the BoE for Mayor Ford, by the way - and it could throw the race.

A double shot of C&TKG arrogance today: Finkbeiner dodges his second debate of the campaign, up at a cottage in Michigan, "enjoying the healthy air," said Kest ganger and Carty spokesman Bob Reinbolt. (why not enjoy the air at Delaney's Finkbeiner? Oh, I'm sorry, you and the Kest gang worked to keep unhealthy air here in Toledo last year. Hiding from the press over your old friend Montalto, Carty?)

Irish, Montalto, Finkbeiner - the waning days of this campaign are nothing more than a greedy, selfish last stab for Carty & the Kest gang. Domenic always had a knack for standing up and making eloquent cases for Democratic loyalty and solidarity - all forgotten in he and fellow Kest gangers subterfuge of Mayor Ford the past two years. Where's the loyalty and respect to our base, Dom?

Smart move by Carty. Ford's numbers aren't moving despite throwing a ton of money at the race. Carty's are still going up and he is going to get through the primary -- Ford still may not. Being on a family vacation, everybody knows that Carty works hard and has a lot of energy, they'll give him the benefit of the doubt for being gone. If Ford's numbers were higher, he'd pull the same stunt. He can't get away with it now, Toledoans already think he's been on vacation for four years. Carty has gotten through the first stage in his campaign in a better fashion than anyone would have thought. The train is picking up speed and, unfortunately for some, will run over a lot of people -- especially those who staked everything on trying to stop it. The paybacks are going to be a bitch.

That's a sad example of the arrogance coming out of the Finkbeiner camp.

It was the arrogance of the Ford administration that created Ford's difficult position in the first place.

The July 14 Blade article listing the schedule for the debates was also posted here. The July 14 Blade article said about the five scheduled debates:

"... Mr. Finkbeiner will miss two of them."

"At 7 p.m. on Aug. 25, the Toledo Area Chamber of Commerce will hold an on-air debate in the studios of WGTE-TV, Channel 30. Only members of the chamber will be invited to attend, and Tom Walton, vice president-editor of The Blade will moderate. The chamber said they will invite all candidates whose names appear on the ballot. Of the top four, only Mr. Finkbeiner declined, saying he will be on his once-yearly vacation with his family in northern Michigan."

More than a month ago it was publicly known that Carty would miss tonight's debate. The family vacation was planned long before the debate was scheduled.

Carty's been deceiving people long before that...when he was on his TV show he was raising money, despite his public position denying it. His finance report shows he started active campaigning in February.

If anyone is decieving, it is Ford and his b.s. numbers about job growth. Read Frantz's column in the Toledo Free Press about Ford's economic development. Ohio's economy is growing and unemployment is dropping. For whatever reason, Toledo is still lagging behind the rest of Ohio. I know for Ford that it is always someone else's fault, but what comparisons should we use? Even Maumee, Oregon, and Sylvania are growing -- they're in the same county! At some point people need to wake up and realize that the City of Toledo stands out because of its ineptness in economic development.

0.0% growth during the Finkbeiner years - with a Clinton economy! Hardly something for Carty to brag about. Mayor Ford's Toledo and our suburbs have had it tough under the Bush recession.

The more telling number is that Toledo has had a negative -5.4 growth during the Ford administration -- Toledo is still behind all the other areas. Congratulations Mayor Ford -- the local economy is struggling, but your city is the worst of all! Perrysburg at 11.4% growth?! That just reaffirms that growth can happen in NE Ohio, just not in Lucas County with its anti-business mentality. By the way, wasn't Ford just bragging at the Democratic Convention that Toledo LOST 16,000 jobs during the last four years. Know he is claiming that jobs are being created! You can't have it both ways.

Where to start...
Carty's vacation was planned long before the schedule for the debates were decided. Coincidence? No other date was available? Hmmm.
Why all the noise over Dom? Why do you feel the need to insult the man Frank? I have known Dom for over 20 years and have nothing but respect for him. The incinuation that Dom would toss out absentee ballots from the inner city is an all new low for you Frank. It's ARROGANCE on YOUR part assumming that all those ballots would go to Ford anyway! Sounds like profiling.

Even though people run for office they are entitled to honor family obligations. Since Carty and his family had this outing planned months ago, it seems unfair to label it as 'dodging' or 'evasion'.

If Jack Ford was so confident in his 'record of job creation' he wouldn't be letting you spout off like a spoiled child.

You're doing more to inflame and inflate than to support. Time to grow up a little Frank.

It seems like Mr. Szollosi spends most of his time tearing people down, like Mr. Finkbeiner and the Republicans. There is not much of what he stands for. This type of ranting turns me off in a very big way. I don't see the venom coming from Mr. Finkbeiner, only that he thinks Toledo can be better than it is. A lot of hate from Mr. Ford and Mr. Szollosi. I'm done coming to this site and Mr. Szollosi you've lost my vote. Grow up.

This seems as good a place as any to post this question Frank. Does or does not section 65 of the city charter forbid Carty from running for mayor (we all remember the condo deal, no need to rehash it all), and if so why is nobody pursuing legal action to stop him?

11:34 PM

Ford has been caught lying a number of times. The problem with politicians these days is they seem to forget what they say on one taped interview and say the opposite on another as if everyone forgot.
We now have "Con-dough" Carty against "Steam plant" Jack. At least in Carty's defense he owned the property he got rid of. Jack gave away prime riverfront property to a campaign donor. Pick your poison or lesser of the evils and vote for him.

1:14 AM

The legal action on Carty was indeed looked into, it was Mayor Ford's Law Dirctor who signed off on the interpretation that allows Carty to run.

Sepp, Carty's condo thing was illegal & wrong. The steamplant deal was legit & proper - despite what you hear on the radio.

During our CRUCIAL Presidential campaign, Carty was "MIA."

Now the Teamsters provide Carty with his campaign headquarters and much of his support.

The Blade reports on a Carty campaign meeting at the Docks. Among the guests?

Tom Noe.

Does Frank have a comment about the disappointing article in The Blade today about how Lucas County has LOST almost 5% of its white collar jobs in the last 5 years. All other major metropolitan centers in Ohio are GROWING (even Youngstown) jobs in the new knowledge economy. Why does Toledo so blatantly stand out compared to other Ohio cities? This should be a call-to-arms for Toledo to recognize that something is seriously wrong with our local economy. And no, it's not Bush's fault, or Taft's fault (both of whom I am not fans of), this time its Lucas County's fault. We need to accept responsibility that we are not getting the job done. It's as simple as that.

Manufacturing jobs are great -- but they are going to disappear over time as productivity increases and the economy becomes even more global. We need to get ahead of the curve or we will be the next Youngstown, if we're not already.

Our government seems obsessed with creating more and more union manufacturing jobs, while watching other areas cities take up all the white collar job (i.e. new knowledge economy) growth.

Here's a start. I'm a local businessman. Simply put: People sense a real anti-business sentiment by our local officials. No offense to who is running the county but, from an outsiders perspective, you have a UAW hack and a social worker. I suspect that, in my company, I would not even hire them to handle our accounts recievables. And they're making multi-million dollar decisions affecting our economic future. I'm sure their nice people, but I would not want my sweet-old aunt running the show at my company.

As for Toledo City Council, what real business expertise is there? Frank, I don't know your background, but I don't no how many jobs you've had outside of politics (consulting or whatever) or working for the government. Don't take it the wrong way, but without that experience, we are at a real loss. None of the candidates seem to have any. Ludman claims to be one, but he is a real estate agent. Again -- he seems like a nice guy -- but we're not looking to buy a house. Wilkski seemed bright on t.v. last night and has some good legal experience. At least he seems to get it and care enough to put a plan together. I'm afraid Wilkski will turn into just another politcial hack, though.

All the in-fighting and name-calling that goes on in Toledo has to be one of the reasons. We have absolutely no focus on REAL economic development. Think about how long we debated a Costco at Westgate. What's next -- should a Kohl's be built at Southwyck or are they too anti-union to be acceptable. Other cities seem to be talking about much more important things. I hope this is not a product that the Democrats have been running things here so long they are lazy. The Republicans aren't much better, though.

Where are the talented people who will fight for what is best for Toledo, not fight themselves and placate The Blade and the unions. Both of them are running this city into the ground. We need REAL leadership -- Ford, Carty, Ludman, or Wilkski or whoever.

Let's quit being so damn political all the time. Other cities in Ohio are eating our lunch and it is only going to get worse unless something changes. Democrats, Republicans, independants -- no one in the real world really cares about the labels. We need good, intelligent, thoughtful people who really understand how economies work to be running this place. I don't know if we have them -- I think the best we can hope for is that some of them will learn.

Yes, I plan a post soon on the jobs article. I disagree with your characterization of Pete & Tina, though.

Impatience with economic development is why I sought the committee spot from the outgoing chairman earlier this year -- noone is claiming to be satisfied.

Last year I really got an education working on the Port Authority Levy - and had prior experience at the county and federal levels. This will shock my critics, but at one point in my career I exchanged mutual fund shares for Fidelity Investments, having earned Series 6 & 63 licences.

ED is my number one priority on city council - its how families in Toledo support their kids, how investors make money, it's how we'll grow ourselves out of our budget deficit, keep our safety forces and neighborhoods strong, and support our municipal employees as they deliver services that exceed expectations.

The events of this campaign season have probably taken up too much space on this blog - but I don't regret any part of the experiment. I enjoy the hardball.

Carty is one trickster. I met Carty back in 1975 when he was Carleton and a Republican. My wife talked me into working for his congressional campaign after attending a tea for him.

We walked many neighborhoods, Carty and I, and he told me that when a potential voter would answer the door, I should emphasize that he was an INDEPENDENT Republican.

Carty has always been in this for Carty's sake with an occasional toss of cake to the citizens. During those many October evenings while I knocked on the doors and Carty walked in the center of the street, waiting for voters to come out on the porch, I thought he was the right man for the job. But both of us were young and I was way too naive to know the real Carty behind that great big smile and firm handshake.

My first clue came several months later when the two of us attended the same social event and, much to my surprise, he didn't know who the hell I was.

That's the Carty that I know and that's why I would vote for a yellow dog before I'd vote for him.

1. Seven new supplier plants @ Jeep

2. Established Care-Net serves 6000 people

3. Balanced budget

4. Largest street repaving in history of Toledo

5. Small buisness Award from a republican President

All during a recession, and dealing with Carty's $17 million debt.

Sounds wide awake to me.

1:53 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

OK, Hans, seeing you posted this "alleged" accomplishment list, explain to me where Jack was the first 3 and a half years? Why is he using taxpayer money to fund his campaign?

1) That would be Jeep, not Jack Ford.

2)Why only 6,000 people? Aren't there a whole lot more than 6,000 people in need of these services?

3)Balanced Budget? Only because he got a refund from the BWC and a "found" six million dollar stipend.

4) I'm sure the State can be held accountable for any major thurofare paving. Filling 50 potholes on one street is not repaving.

5)He got that award AFTER his smoking ordinance?

Personally, I find Jack's racism a major problem with his campaign. That story about Malcolm X's portrait and the antics that portrait causes our esteem mayor's white guests, as well as other documented racial antics printed in the Toledo Journal cause me to pause as to the direction Toledo's future is seriously headed if Jack is re-elected.

1. Mayor Ford was instrumental in bring the Supplier plants

2. You complain that a social service isn't servicing enough people, not really a rebuttal.

3. $17 million minus $6 million Equals $11 Million. Still one hell of bill from Carty.

5. Roads are being totally redone. Get your facts right.

6. Mayor Ford had the vision to see that a smoking ban is necessary. Eventually the entire state will have a smoking ban.

Just reading over everyone’s comments. I'm just wondering really who should I vote for? People were not happy when Carty was in office, there was always something negative said about him in the tabs. Well and then there is Ford. I don't want to vote for Ford because he decided that Ohio was a right to work state. The last time I checked it wasn’t, yet our schools that were promised to union workers were denied this work. My fiancé is a union member, (who supported Jack, on unfilled promises) and has now been laid off for 8 months and no real work in sight for him or hundreds of others. Those schools were really needed for those that spent money for their degrees and all the union dues, for what, to let jobs be taken from them! As for myself, well I'm a Special Education teacher, there is a real need for them , yet with all the school closings and lay offs there are no jobs available for myself and hundreds of others in Toledo, Maumee, Sylvania, ect. but especially in Toledo. Our children are the ones to suffer, along with the teachers. Its sad, all of our jobs that we are qualified for, are being offered to us from else where. This is where both of us have grown up, this is where we wanted our children to grow up. With the way everything is going, why raise children here, there is nothing for their parents, nor them. Its amazing to me when I here people comparing Toledo to the ghetto. “Everyone is just trying to get out but can't because they are broke.” Is there something wrong with this statement? Unemployment is down! The only reason this seems to be this way is because of our great man Bush has made unemployment available for 6 months. Our people are still not working after 6 months, they are still unemployed but their numbers now are not counted!@!Again in closing who do you vote for??!!! Who is going to help us, restore life here. (Statements made if I were to vote for Carty or Jack)
