Southwyck

The decision by Larry Dillin to enter into a business agreement with the owners of Southwyck Mall for redevelopment makes for a great day for Toledo and NW Ohio. Mayor Ford was the catalyst - and his quiet and effective style is mirrored in the cool professionalism of Mr. Dillin. Reject cynicism and be happy for the businesses and residents of South Toledo.

Can we compromise on me being cautiously optimistic that this time a plan for Southwyck works?

I hope something works out, but I'm a little skeptical. Dillin has yet to say he will build anything there, he's simply looking into it. Fallen Timbers will be completed by the time Dillin would even start finding tenants, so I'm concerned about the viability of another lifestyle center in South Metro. That being said, Dillin is a proven developer with Levis Commons, so hopefully he can pull it off.

What developers ought to do with Southwyck is demolish the mall and pull up a outlet stores, similar to the one in Monroe, MI. Many Toledoans go to Monroe to shop at the outlet stores because there are few outlet stores in Toledo.
I feel hat if Toledo goes with an outlet center on the site of Southwyck, people will come to the South End to shop. This will help the area.

That would be a good idea, and it would be a niche that Fallen Timbers and Levis Commons won't fill. Frank, maybe you can suggest this to Dillin or the Mayor. The company that runs Sawgrass Mills, Opry Mills, and all the other Mills seems to do it right.

Not to be a cynic, but I'll clap when I see some actual financing in place.

Interesting how the 120-day window for the report to be released expires after the November election.

Wilkowski issued a press release today naming southwyck as 1 of the top ten "PHANTOM PROJECTS" of Jack Ford. Yesterday was Jack's 3rd press comference announcing a "plan" to rescue southwyck in 3 years. "Democrat playbook #57, hold a press conference announcing an undisclosable plan and hope the people forget about it". That's about all we have gotten from Jack in 4 years, press conferences and then...nothing. Keith is looking better every day.

I really hope it works this time, although we won't know until well after the election. I think this is political mistake Ford. Voters aren't idiots. The people are going to see right through it -- he's had four years and nothing. Now, with an election in which he is losing.... Sepp, you're right -- Wilkowski is looking better every day.

Seriously, an Outlet Mall? Has anyone been up to Monroe's outlet mall recently? There's about three stores left and the lot is almost empty, even on weekends. Why? Because most people have figured out that outlet stores aren't much cheaper than regular stores.

The only thing that will work on the Southwyck site are big box stores. They're cheap to build and in 15 years when they're empty, no one debates for years about how to save them. They just get knocked down and built over.
