Carty & Kest Gang Silent on Noe, Attack Dems

Word comes that Carty & the Kest Gang want to call authorities in Columbus about Toledo Mayor Jack Ford using old yard signs from 2001 with the word "endorsed" on them. What a joke. It would be funny if it wasn't such a sad commentary: instead of going after the GOP and Tom Noe, instead of sticking up for Ohio's injured workers, nope, time to carry water for Finkbeiner and weakly smack at Mayor Ford. Apparently calls are being made for a Carty press conference late next week at International Park - probably see some new Carty Party candidates, too.

For the record, Carty & the Kest Gang have opted for "banishment" (their word) of popularly elected Democrats, including three young, white Catholics, several African-Americans, a gay Latino, and the President of the Toledo School Board who happens to be Jewish. Carty & the Kest Gang, and some in the party, have treated Mayor Jack Ford with considerable disrespect. They have cooked up weak explanations about when the "sanctions" will occur. Whatever. We are men and women who have given time, money and loyalty to the Democratic Party at every level for years. All have good reputations as elected officials. And for what? The personal ambition of perennial wanna-be Carty Finkbeiner and John Irish's comfort in the Treasurer's Office for the few weeks that remain. Democrats around Ohio and in Washington are terrified by the damage they can do to our chances next year.

Thing is, Carty & the Kest Gang have had strong allegiances with GOP Commissioner Thurber. She, GOP County Commissioner candidate Lynn Olman, and Gov. Bob Taft have enjoyed the support of Teamsters Local 20 chief Bill Lichtenwald - a key ally to Kest & Finkbeiner. After Kest resigned to avoid prosecution for unlawful actions, that his top deputies looked past, the Treasurer-elect by all rights should have taken over. Sure, there were going to be some new folks up there, and Kest deputies Mr. Irish and Mr. Montalto could have taken other jobs. But no, Carty & the Kest gang wanted to prove who was boss, set Wade back, and cast him as someone who was hard-hearted about treatment of employees. (Yeah, Carty concerned about someone else treating public employees inappropriately, that's a good one.) When the time came for the Commissioners to fill the post, a longtime Kest aide withdrew her name at the last minute, and Carty, the Kest Gang, and Thurber talked someone close to Finkbeiner into blocking the Treasurer-elect. After a brief period, a local labor official, pro-Carty and who hosted Ray Kest's fundraisers for years and years, again shunted the choice of the people aside and stepped in ahead of the candidate endorsed by the Lucas County Democratic Party for Treasurer, and who had just been resoundingly elected to the post. Carty, the Kest Gang and Thurber worked very closely to perpetrate this sham.

If I sound angry, I am. Many of us worked hard, long and in good faith to bring Democrats and labor together to win elections, no one worked harder or more duplicitously at undermining Mayor Ford and aggravating the local Democratic split than Finkbeiner and the Kest hold-outs.

I guess they don't want us at Executive Committee so they don't have to hear this brought up again and again. But Mayor Ford and Wilkowski are the most likely to pop through in the September primary, 85 days away. Carty knows this, the Kest Gang fears this. The voter's choices will be a little harder to disrespect next time fella's.

Carty doesent need to go against the GOP. The GOP is wrecking its self pretty well on it's own.
Why the lables? Why not just name names instead of labling people as gay, latino, black, jewish or, white? It smacks of race baiting and is nothing more than a cheap tactic. I had expected more than that from you Frank.
You keep mentioning the "Kest" gang. I would think that Ray must get an ego boost every time he hears it. Nothing better for a washed up ghost of the past to keep hearing his name.

Sepp...recognizing diversity builds community, its not a cheap tactic. BTW, deleted previous post as there's no tolerance here for anonymous name calling. There are other venues for that.

It is absolutely disgusting to see that people who claim to be democrats; people who have worked their entire public careers in pulic service as democrats, are now out attacking those people who now are THE good democrats.

Democrats have stood for years as the party that cares about the common person; the common man, woman and child. It is so sad, as a young person working towards a career in public service, to see these people who used to have the decency to declare candidacies and to be serious about their intentions to work for those common folks, act like republicans. Yes, that's right, I said it. Carty, Kest and the gang are nothing more than DINOs-Democrats in Name Only. I'm ashamed to have them call themselves Democrats. I have been taught from a young age that being a democrat was about serving those who are less fortunate, and those who work hard for a living. I'm ashamed to say that Carty and Ray Kest are not those types of people. They are merely out to boost their own egos. Much like Tom Noe and James Conrad-boosting their own egos-and wallets. They are exactly, as a student of public policy, what we are taught NOT to do.

As far as the Teamsters President, I hope he now realizes that a man who supports Gov. Taft and his political allies has no right to represent a group of the hardest working men and women I know; one of them being my father.

This is exactly how the Democrats will loose control, infighting and all of this focus on Team A and Team B.

So, if you want to hand the election to Ludeman? I'm sure he's enjoying the squabbles.

While I personally believe this focus on parties is not what our founding fathers wanted, and even warned us against for those of you who are Democrats this isn't helping you. It makes those of us who share some of your beliefs and ideals shake our heads and be thankful we don't have that "D" behind our name.

Noe is going to be a non-issue unless there is an indictment from the Grand Jury, especially given the huge dollar loss from the hedge fund and other management issues within the BWC. That has made the whole Noe thing pale in comparison.

This whole "good Democrat" and "DINO" thing serves what purpose? What matters is how the majority of Toledo voters see this, and last I heard Mayor Ford was not receiving high marks in his ratings. That should be what is concentrated on and what will happen if it is a three way between Carty, Ford and Wilkowski. How do you manage to unite or do you chose to continue to divide....

Ram--

Sorry about the posting as "anonymous" but I'm not a registered blogger on this site...

Frank has an open invitation to join me on the air any time he likes, as he will readily admit. I've asked him numerous times to do an interview specifically on this blog site, but he has politely declined.

Hopefully we can work something out in the near future that is accomodating to his schedule, especially as he gets closer to his run for reelection to council.

Just wanted to set the record straight.

Frantz's show is an entertainment show - I've prefered for entertainment "24", a couple concerts, weekend festivals, and a few baseball games.

Noticed on toledotalk.com that folks aren't getting the background on the "Kest Gang" reference. I understand Ray himself is in Florida, but a few of his operatives remain in the Treasurer's Office. They are linked to a select few past Kest supporters who snuck up on the former chair of the Lucas Co. Dem. Party and seized control via the central committee. I've always considered myself a Democrat who wants help other Democrats win elections, and have worked with folks on the so-called A and B teams. I worked hard to help Sandy last year, and for Paula for years before that. There is only one reason we aren't unified going in to 2006, and thats a result of Carty Finkbeiner and a few Kest-hold outs - shame on them. Since then Carty's people have rigged the by-laws to endorse their friends and "banish" those not in line with Finkbeiner's mayoral aspirations. Under the leadership of the so-called A team, Kest was endorsed repeatedly and his operatives welcome at headquarters. Some so-called A teamers even helped Carty's re-election, which was supported by LCDP headquarters. The difference now, obviously, is LCDP headquarters is undermining not only the incumbent Democratic Mayor, but also incumbent Democratic City Councilmembers, and, as mentioned in original post, rejected the endorsed Democrat and just-elected county Treasurer, not once, but twice, not for the betterment of the party or office, but to further divide the party for Carty's gain.

And they choose to operate clandestinely, when they filled central committee seats to temporarily get the keys to headquarters and rig the by-laws, and in Carty's stealth mayoral campaign.

"Carty and the Kest Gang" boils down to this question: Do you reward the operatives who let Ray get away with everything with the Mayor's office? Carty is unalterably attached and dependent on the vestiges of the Kest operation. I'd don't want that for my Toledo. Its not that I dislike them personally, but they have screwed up the party, bad.

This is alot of inside baseball, but I guess you wouldn't have read this far without being interested in the details.

Frank, I may not agree with you on some issues, however at least you try to address them so you get an "A" for effort from me for what that's worth.

As for Toledo Talk, maybe there is inside information, however it seems to the more "non-insider" that Kest is really not a big player anymore. (Yes I was interested because I kept reading)

I believe the focus should be more on unity and less on division, the whole being the better person, making the focus be the best person wins not the best A team or the best B team or in some cases even the best republican. Overall I do believe you generally attempt that as well. If I didn't I certainly wouldn't come here and comment nor would I list your blog on mine.

If Carty and Kest are truly what you wrote they are? Let them seal their own fate because despite what some people may believe, voters are smarter than that most times.

To be brutually honest I believe by giving them attention that you give them more power than they in reality really have.

In closing... I wouldn't do Franz's show either. The fact that he "ripped" you for some of us is a plus not a minus.

I'll disagree with Lisa here. I think you should go on Bob's show. Is it entertianment? Yes. Would it allow you to present your side of things? Yes. It's live radio and what you say can't be distorted or deleted if Bob should disagree. I'd look forward to it.

I am having issues with good vs. bad in the Democratic circle. Like circles of friends, you get peeved at one and you move off and form another group. The original group is still there and name calling won't change that. As far as the Lucas County Democratic Party is concerned, they are the original group. Each faction that forms from that group causes only more confusion in the already confused voters. What is wrong with this picture. Lets start concerning ourselves with the voters and not our hurt feelings. Get to the basics people, the citizens are the makeup of this city.

Well said Anon....... Politics are whoever can sling mud the farthest wins, while the citizens sit back and watch.

Then they wonder why they are disliked or disapproved of.

Whats happened in Lucas county is happening in a lot of other places too. The "old school democrats" are resisting seeing their party being taken over by what amounts to nothing more than just neo-socialists. I can see where the older party members would be reluctant to hand over the the party to some of these people.

It's not that the old time Democrats are afraid of letting go, it's that they feel betrayed by the division and that they are forsaken for the careers of the selfish. As far as other cities, if we are fashioning ourselves after cities that aren't successful, shame on us. WE THE PEOPLE GET THE OFFICIALS ELECTED, where is the appreciation?

I think any political party that has been in power for too long has issues. One of the very reasons the founding fathers cautioned us against letting them take control in the first place.

Those more "conservative" in nature no matter whether they have the "D" or the "R" behind their name resist change, those more "liberal" in nature want change.

In reality the perfect balance is finding a way to cooperate to keep the things that work and change those that don't. That is something that many lose sight of.

Let us not engage in revisionist history here.

Adams, Jefferson, and Hamilton all were instrumental in creating political parties. Democrats honor Jefferson as one of their founding fathers.

Desire for change is no indication of where somebody is on the political spectrum. Like his policies or not, most would agree that the conservative Reagan did much to change governance. The (somewhat)liberal Clinton was more incremental in his approach. Both achieved success and popularity.

Frank, just know altho some/most people may/will not agree with some/all of your views/votes, nor with some of the censorship/selective deletions of ignorant posts you exhibit on your site, just know some/most of us appreciate the time and effort you sacrifice in your free time to tend to this place.

Personally I don't appreciate the direction the present political machine on 22nd floor has driven the North, South, East Side or West End into the ground, you were elected by a majority. But I will acknowledge that what you have here is something positive if utilized appropritely.

Take advantage of this medium and listen to the voices posted here, Frank, these people are relying on you, seeing you're the only one on city council that cares enough to provide this....avenue to communicate and express themselves.

Thank you.
