Carty Cancelled

Perhaps hiatus is another possibility - but I dont think so. The executives over at WTVG 13 ABC have finally acknowledged that their on-air "talent" campaigns across Toledo with impunity, that his actions betray his words about not making up his mind on the Mayor's race. Perhaps the Keith Wilkowski boomlet will be the trigger. Perhaps the impending summer festival season. Appropriately enough, the glass directory at the entrance of One Government Center still reads "Ray T Kest, Lucas County Treasurer - Suite 500." Carty has relied on the Kest gang to split and weaken the Democratic Party, and their promised reward is Suite 2200. Mayor Ford & I & others reached out to the new party leadership, but Carty & the Kest gang rebuffed us - splitting Democrats at a critical time for the citizens of our city, state and nation. Do they really think Toledo will deliver?

Why wouldn't we give them the chance to do the right thing and support Mayor Ford?

Frank,

I would like to hear more about how you reached out to the "B" team....

Pretty simple & straightforward...Last year many people did everything they could to defeat George W. Bush - many Democrats regardless of A-B moniker. Mayor Ford and his allies certainly did all he could do. Carty helped very little, and in fact, hurt us very marginally with his choice of guests and their comments on his now cancelled TV show.

So, during the fight to defeat Bush and looking ahead to the important statewide races in 2006 - then-Chairman Isenberg held a few Elected Officials meetings to help bring the party & elected officials together. In good faith Mayor Ford and many other elected Democrats attended. Obviously, the right the thing to do was support Mayor Ford and so many others who worked so hard for Democratic candidates. Obviously, Carty's agenda meant no endorsement of Ford and sanctions for the rest of us. We'll be disposing Carty's agenda soon enough.

Supporting Mayor Ford may seem to be the "right" thing to do for some but, not all.
The Mayor's popularity has dwindled over the last 4 years due to the things he does and, doesent do. All Carty has to do is sit back and play the Ronald Reagan card and ask voters "are you better off now after 4 years of Jack Ford?" or "where is the elegant city you were promised?". As for Carty's tv show being cancelled, my question is what took them so long? I hope they fill his timeslot with a RONCO infomercial. At least with ronco you can get something for your money.

Frank,

I respect your position, and I applaud your willingness to run this blog, so I do not want you to take this wrong way. You claim that it is the right thing to do to support Mayor Ford because he is a good democrat. If supporting good democrats is the right thing to do, then why is lucascountydemocrats.org recruiting people to run for municipal judge in both Toledo and suburban areas against endorsed candidates. The people endorsed for those positions are also "good" democrats. If you claim the "B" team is wrong for not supporting Jack, then it is also wrong to recruit democrats to run against other democrats in judicial races. All that will be accomplished is that it will be easier for a Republican to come in a take a seat. I have a real problem with the hypocrisy demonstrated by this tactic. I am interested in your thoughts

Frank,

You are doing a GREAT job with this blog!

I support your comments on Carty 100%. Anybody who invites Tom Noe to his campaign fundraising event is NO DEMOCRAT in my book. I suspect that the reason why the TV station pulled the plug on that megalomaniac is because their corporate counsel warned them they aiding and abetting a CLEAR violation of campaign law.

Some of us remember that Carty started out as a Perrysburg Republican- seems to me like he is just going back to his roots.

In response to the endorsements of lucascountydemocrats.org PAC I have these thoughts...

First, it is terribly hypocritical for Carty & the Kest gang to have changed the bylaws of the county party against early endorsements (claiming high principles), and then only withholding endorsements in the Toledo Mayor's and council races - and not judicial and school board races, or suburban races.

They re-wrote the rules on endorsements exclusively to make it easier for Carty to run against Jack - did it early last summer - and have resolutely refused to change it. Carty and John Irish are responsible, though a party committee takes credit for it.

The PAC is comprised of successful elected Democrats who are thoughtfully interviewing candidates for all the offices on the ballot this year, and they'll be making recommendations next month.

It is not enough to say "endorse Mayor Ford because he is a good Democrat." I have consistently said that a) Ford has provided stable, mature leadership in challenging times and b) he has been a champion within the Democratic party for many years, contributing tens of thousands to dollars and alot of time & effort into getting Democrats elected in Toledo, Lucas County, Ohio and nationally. It is wrong for the LCDP, or any Democrat, to turn their backs on him for Carty Finkbeiner, who did next to nothing for John Kerry nor other Democratic candidates, before, during and after his terms as Mayor.

Really, great job with this blog Frank! Your attentiveness to this despite your busy schedule is admirable and a sign of your skill at making use of modern technologies. I was looking for a Carty blog...still looking, Anyone? Anyone? Buehler?

As a (relatively) young person in this area and a lifelong Democrat, I am THRILLED to see the formation of the new lucascountydemocrats.org PAC! Great to keep the ideals of the Democratic Party while trying to remove the blight and short sightedness of self-centered folks who do not have a real vision for our community and Party other than maintaining their own personal share of the power pie. America was founded by brave people who had the courage to discard antiquated government and procedures. Many outside observers of American politics are amazed at our ability to evolve and transform policy at the local level. Thank you all for doing just that.

Finally! Carty has to pay for TV time like a real candidate? Is that fair? I mean really, how can Carty afford to publicize his complaints, his armchair quarterback role if on the same playing field as legitimate candidates? Dunno.

I do wonder-- If someone really had the vision and desire to lead a city like Toledo, shouldn't they have the courage to put themselves formally in the race for mayor? Thank you Mayor Ford, and yes, Councilman Ludeman for respecting citizens of Toledo enough to formally commit to a good race. Carty seems to lack the courage, vision, or worse, respect to formally declare his candidacy for Mayor.

If he is that indecisive and disrespectful now, what should we expect from him if he were (gulp!) elected? Last I read, power does not typically bring out the best in mankind...

Is Carty too big of a flake to enter the ring like a real candidate? Does he need time to come up with a real plan and a real vision since his "winging it" style may fall flat in the tough economic times that he did not have to cope with during his previous reign under Clinton? Come on Carty, we are smarter than you think. If he had support, vision, and confidence shouldn't he have joined the race by now?

Starting in last, finishing in last?

Our city lacks a lot of politicians with "vision". I'd like to see an elected official in this city with the 4 "C's", COURAGE, CANDOR, COMPETENCE and, COMMITTMENT which is what every true leader demonstrates or, at least should be demonstrating. I could care less if it's "A" team "B"team, republican or independent. I live here and I'm raising my kids here. The person that has the city's best interest before his / her own is the one to vote for as far as I'm concerned.

Frank,

You make my point for me. If people should not turn their back on Mayor Ford because he has been very supportive of local and national democrats, then it is ok for lucascountydemocrats.org to turn their backs on the endorsed judicial candidates, who have also been supportive locally and nationally. You cannot have it both ways. Are you saying that the candidates who have been endorsed by the LCDP are not democrats who have been supportive nationally and locally, because I know that is not true. What is the difference here? Thanks...

Sepp, we agree on the need for leaders with vision. I'm not all that keen on oversimplifications like the "4Cs" of leadership. I for one do not know all the elected leaders in Lucas County well enough to judge them all on this. I doubt most of us could or should.

This is Frank's Blog. From what I know about Frank, Mayor Ford, and Carty, is that the first two have all 4Cs; if that is a good measure. Just because Ford is quite, does not mean much. I am in the field of psychology and mental health, believe me, I appreciate "candor." Then again, I also have intimate hour-long contacts with people to work out the rough edges inherent in “candor.” Political types do not have this luxury as the media robs them of the ability to publicly respond in thoughtful and extended ways. The sad price of the sound bite…

Jack Ford and Frank Szollosi are (as I say) "wickedly smart" and talented folks. In the private sector they could make much, much more money! They overflow with competence, yet they have the "commitment" to serving their community, for a good greater than their own. To me, this is what a public servant should look like. Please note that neither Frank nor Ford chose to "cash-out" or puff their egos based on their name recognition and a television contract. Integrity matters.

Dan,
The 4 C's are like you said "simple". Every person who would lead should at the minimum be exhibiting these traits. Rough edges of candor?
Candor;
n 1: ability to make judgments free from discrimination or dishonesty [syn: fairness, fair-mindedness, candour] [ant: unfairness] 2: the quality of being honest and straightforward in attitude and speech [syn: candour, candidness, frankness, forthrightness]

I'm not seeing much evidence of candor from Jack Ford and never expected it from Carty.

Those "Toledo works" campaign signs are pretty self-promoting as was Carty's "keep his name alive for an election" TV show. The only thing in Carty's favor is that the taxpayers didn't foot the bill for his self-promotion.
As for Frank,
I only "know" him from this blog and seeing him on council. He seems like a decent guy and,I do like it that he is attempting to reach into the community and get some feedback from the folks on the ground. I do have a gripe that he deletes posts that he doesn't agree with. Deleting filth is completly understandable.

One Carty rerun I would like to see is the time after he lost in one of his many bids for Mayor (as a republican by the way) and he cried like baby. I'm pretty sure Channel 11 has copy of that archived somewhere.

I appreciate the comment Sepp.

I do wonder though about the the integrity of someone who tries to define "candor" for us, but who themselves uses a pseudonym rather than their real name while posting?

If you truely believe in what you say, put your real name to it.

This IS Frank's blog, he has a professional image to maintain. I think we need to respect this. We all have the ability to create our own blogs if we do not like his decisions...

Thanks,

Dan Eble
