We Need a Democratic Governor in Ohio

"About the only good news to
report is that Bob Taft is term limited and
cannot run for office again."

This sums up not a liberal-Democratic critique of our Governor, but is the opinion of the conservative CATO Institute in Washington, DC & its just released annual report card on Governors. Gov. Taft gets an F, particularly for the record tax hikes he and his Republican Legislators have pushed through since 1999.

Even today, splashed across front pages statewide, tax and fee increases that hurt Ohio's middle class continue (Ohio Parks Discontinue Free Parking), and our own Republican Toledo City Councilman George Sarantou is on a utility rate jihad against the GOP dominated Public Utilities Commission of Ohio. And the GOP's wrong priorities are likely to result in a $3 million cut for disabled children in Toledo Public Schools.

Ahh, but we need to cut income taxes for the wealthiest in Ohio by more than 20%, says the Governor! (late in his term)

There is a new thread going on the Ohio Democratic Party's blog with reaction to today's scathing Cleveland Plain Dealer column on the good Governor.

Amen to all this.

The Ohio progressive blogging community is gearing up to work on this along with many other races here in Ohio. Speaking for myself, I have my eyes firmly on the 2011 redistricting fight and the needed seats on the apportionment board.

That means that house district 21 is important, as well as the Governor's race, as well as the Secretary of State's race.

There will be a lot of work to do statewide.

Taft is a terrible governor. All he does is tax and spend. We are spending more than we ever have in Ohio and wasting so much of it. Look at what we waste on our public schools like Toledo that always fail. Teachers make $55k a year, a hell of a lot more than what I make. All they want is more money and raises.
Also, how the hell does UT plan on spending $300m on an expansion. What another waste of money.

We need to cut our spending on schools and medicaid. Ohio's budget needs to be cut in half.

Teachers are heros Toledo Joe, and woefully underpaid for their personal and professional investment in our children and by extension our collective future.

UT should invest some of that in expanding in Downtown Toledo. Move the law school downtown and maybe some student housing. Not even the Urban Affairs office is downtown.

Medicaid cuts? You must be for single payer health care then.

To Toledo Joe:

If you make a "hell of a lot" less than 55K, then we could apply Rush Limbaugh's doctrine and just tell you to make more money!

Although I wasn't anywhere as offensive and pissy about it as you were, Joe, I once thought teachers ... well, had a pretty good job, what with the hours and the summers off and all that.

And then I met one, fell in love and got married to one. Boy, was I wrong. You need to walk a month in her shoes, Joe my man, and then you'll see that life is somewhat different than what Rush, Sean, Newt and the other people who don't exactly work for a living say it is.

Until then, shut up, sir.
